Saving Animals From Extinction (SAFE)

What is SAFE?

Assocation of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) SAFE: Saving Animals From Extinction brings together the collective expertise of AZA-accredited zoos and aquariums and leverages their expansive audiences to save species.

SAFE programs protect threatened animals by seeking to restore wild populations. In a global conservation effort, collaborating institutions identify survival threats, establish recovery plans and invite the public to take action alongside them. Public education is a crucial part of SAFE, inspiring guests to care deeply about threatened species.

SAFE Species at Brookfield Zoo Chicago

At Brookfield Zoo Chicago, there are many opportunities for you to learn about, see and get up-close to SAFE animals. You can offer lettuce to giraffes during seasonal Giraffe Feedings. In the summer Butterflies! habitat, you can wander among dazzling monarchs. Transported from the Zoo to the forests of Rwanda during the Wild Explorer Virtual Reality experience, you can immerse yourself in nature and spot mountain gorillas. Along the way, learn about what each species is facing in the wild and how you can help!

Brookfield Zoo Chicago contributes to the AZA SAFE program every day by sustaining populations of imperiled species in the Zoo’s care, contributing to research and conservation initiatives that support wild populations and educating the public about ways they can help save animals from extinction. The Zoo currently participates in the following SAFE programs:
