Dolphins on "Vacation"
Dolphins Take up Temporary Residence
Our dolphin family is on a "vacation" while their home at Brookfield Zoo gets a complete makeover! Carefully tended to by a team of animal care professionals, Brookfield Zoo’s three dolphins—Tapeko, Noelani, and Allison—arrived safely on Aug. 30 at Minnesota Zoo, an accredited Association of Zoos and Aquariums facility and a member of the Bottlenose Dolphin Breeding Consortium. While the Seven Seas dolphin arena undergoes extensive upgrades, the dolphin arena and underwater viewing area will be closed during the six-month renovation.
Historic Changes
2010 marks Brookfield Zoo's 50th year of caring for dolphins, and we think a home makeover for our dolphin family is the best way to celebrate this milestone. Renovations scheduled for the 20-year-old Seven Seas dolphin arena include:
- relining of the pool
- installation of a new HVAC system
- upgrades to the water filtration system
- roof repairs
- increase of space on the center deck to allow for animal care needs
