Two orphaned California sea lion pups have a new home at the zoo. The two unnamed female pups, born on June 7 and June 10, were abandoned by their moms at a popular tourist attraction, Pier 39 in San Francisco, which is a highly unusual place for a California sea lion to give birth. They are currently off exhibit and getting acclimated to their new surroundings and the zoo’s other sea lions.

Chicago Zoological Society’s Animal Programs staff released five American white pelicans at Brookfield Zoo’s Formal Pool on Tuesday, August 24, 2010. The birds were rescued from the Gulf Coast as a result of the Deepwater Horizon oil spill.

Five American white pelicans, rescued from the Gulf of Mexico as a result of the Deepwater Horizon oil spill, have a new home at Brookfield Zoo. Following physicals and a 30-day quarantine period they will be placed on permanent exhibit at the Formal Pool. Now through mid-September, a pair of golden lion tamarins named Diabo and Delilah has been released in the wooded area just east of Indian Lake. The release provides the monkeys with the opportunity to learn how to catch insects and climb in the trees in an outdoor environment.

The addition of a CT scanner at Brookfield Zoo will add to its world-class imaging suite. Donated by Loyola University Medical Center, this new piece of equipment enhances the zoo’s diagnostic capabilities and gives the Chicago Zoological Society the distinction of having the best, most comprehensive imaging suite in a North American zoo.

The Chicago Zoological Society is now accepting applications for the Youth Volunteer Corps (YVC). This unique conservation leadership program was created for high school students to learn more about the animals and exhibits at the Zoo while at the same time educating guests. Youth earn valuable career training experience in a fun, social environment.

Veterinarian Mike Adkesson, from Chicago Zoological Society's Brookfield Zoo, reports from the coast of Peru on wildlife populations, including South American fur seals. Mike is leading a zoo vet team to understand what threatens the local wildlife population, as they study factors such as disease, environmental contamination, and other health related concerns.

9th grader Madi Vorva is a teen Jane Goodall working to save orangutans. Madi visited Brookfield Zoo in November 2009, traveling from Plymouth, Michigan to participate in the International Orangutan Awareness Weekend. Active in Girl Scouts, she is also helping raise awareness about palm oil production in cookies and other baked goods.
